Linear B
Mycenaean society and culture
Linear B was syllabical and symbolical, consisted of many different symbols which were depicting a syllable. Some words that Myceneans were using and are still present in the Modern Greek language are:
ΑΝΑΞ = KING
ΔΑΜΟΣ = PEOPLE (This is where the word democracy comes from)
However it is important to state that most of the clay discs with Linear B writings that Myceneans left behind were mostly administrative texts helping to keep records of the palatial needs. Even though the language was spoken by everyone, the writing was controlled by the palace and there were also specific types of workers, the scribers, who were responsible for keeping the records. That means that we do not get enough information about the historical facts of their time, but we understand more about how the palaces were functioning.
