Religion
Mycenaean society and culture
The decrypting of the Linear B writing style shed light to the religion of the Myceneans as well. The names of the Gods of the latter greek pantheon were all present in the clay discs, except for Apollo and Aphrodite, who were introduced to the Greeks many years after the fall of the Myceneans. However, it is believed that some of the preexisting gods had different roles in the Mycenaean religion. Poseidon for example, was not the god of the sea in these times, but the god of the earthquakes. The lack of religious sources from these times do not help us understand in depth the Mycenean religion and this is the reason why the building on the top of the citadel is called "cult center" instead of a temple, which is a term used for buildings in later antiquity. So Mycenaeans believed in the Greek pantheon, but in a very archaic version of it, which is not familiar enough to us yet, due to lack of written sources.
