Anthropomorphic figurines
Anthropomorphic figurines
These Mycenaean figurines are particularly fascinating and they probably depict female figures. The torsos are cylindrical, widening towards the base, with upper limbs represented in an abstract style. The heads are angular with pronounced facial features. They are likely to represent priestesses in a pose of worship. Unlike most statuettes from before 1250 B.C.E, which are handmade, these figurines are crafted using a wheel. At least 17 of these figurines, either intact or nearly complete, were discovered in the Cult Center at the Mycenaean acropolis. Most were stored in a confined area and are generally believed to be depictions of deities or protective figures used in religious practices.
