The oil merchant's district
The oil merchant’s district
This neighborhood consists of four large buildings: the Western House, located to the west and parallel to the road; the House of the Oil Merchant, situated in front of the Western House; the House of the Sphinxes, positioned to the left of the House of the Oil Merchant; and the House of the Shields, found to the right of the House of the Oil Merchant. All these residences were two stories tall except for the Western House, which was not entirely two-story. These houses were named after characteristic objects found in them during excavations.
This complex is considered to have been the productive neighborhood of the palace. The Western House was more administrative and domestic in nature, while the Houses of the Shields and the Sphinxes served as workshops for ivory craftsmanship and other material processing, and also functioned as storerooms.
In this architectural complex, mass production of precious ivory items, exotic materials, and aromatic oils flourished. The intricate findings attest to the significant prosperity of trade and demonstrate the contribution of the complex to the exports of the Mycenaeans, which covered the entire Mediterranean area.
