Barceloneta
Barceloneta
We now enter Barceloneta, one of Barcelona’s most historic and charming neighbourhoods! Believe it or not, this vibrant seaside area was mostly underwater until the 1600s. It wasn’t until the construction of Port Vell that the island of Maians was connected to the city, creating the land that would eventually become Barceloneta. Fishermen were the first to make their way here, braving rough seas, and by 1754, the first homes were built to house workers connected to the bustling port. The area is now known for its charm, 18th-century houses, vibrant street life, and its seafaring traditions. Originally developed to address housing shortages, the district became home to fishermen, sailors, and dock workers due to its proximity to the sea. This heritage is reflected in the area's excellent seafood and fish-based cuisine. If you want to try something unique to the area, this is the perfect place to try the ‘Barceloneta bomba’. This is a potato ball stuffed with minced meat, fried and topped with aioli and Catalan brava sauce. It is an iconic dish of the neighbourhood.
