The Blueprint of a Palace
Buckingham Palace
Look at this stunning neoclassical masterpiece: the symmetrical façade, the columns, the triangular pediments above. Yet it wasn’t always so grand. The story begins around 1705 with a house built for John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. In 1762 Buckingham House became royal property when George III bought it for his wife, Queen Charlotte. In the 1820s the house was turned into a palace by George IV, son of George III. Architect John Nash was put to work, ultimately giving the building its characteristic U-shape and neoclassical look. The first monarch to move in was Queen Victoria in 1837. Finding it too small, she oversaw further enlargement, the most notable additions being a new east wing—enclosing the forecourt—and the central balcony on the main façade. Now let’s take a peek inside.
