London’s Brightest Crossroads
Piccadilly Circus
Welcome to Piccadilly Circus, the vibrant heart of Westminster’s shopping, dining, and nightlife. Despite its name, it’s no circus at all. Built in 1819 to link Regent Street with Piccadilly, it took its title from “Piccadils,” the stiff collars crafted by tailor Robert Baker who built the Piccadilly Hall, and the Latin circus for “circle,” nodding to its original round design. When the Tube arrived in 1906, the area transformed into a bustling crossroads of London life. With the dawn of electricity, glowing ads began to appear—first simple bulbs, then neon marvels, and now the iconic billboards that light up the city’s pulse.
