The Road to the Palace
The Mall
The Mall in London began as a 17th-century playing field for “pelle-melle” —a mallet-and-ball lawn game akin to croquet that lent the area its name. Redesigned in the early 1900s by Sir Aston Webb, it became a grand ceremonial avenue linking Admiralty Arch to Buckingham Palace. Since then, it has served as the backdrop for royal processions, jubilees, and national celebrations. Bombed during World War II yet quickly restored, it endures as a symbol of Britain’s pageantry—where flags flutter, horses march, and history moves proudly toward the Palace gates. But let's take a better look at this magnificent arch.
