Southern Gothic
Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi
Time to put on our art historian hats and take a closer look at this striking façade. Santa Maria del Pi is a textbook example of Catalan Gothic—a calmer, sunnier take on the Gothic style, unique to this region. Notice how horizontal lines dominate, unlike the spiky vertical drama of Northern Europe. The façade is clean and minimal, with smooth stone surfaces and little sculptural fuss. Then there’s the purity of form: one wide nave, an independent octagonal bell tower, and sturdy side buttresses, which make space for cozy chapels in between. And windows? Not many! Who needs a wall of stained glass when the Mediterranean sun does the lighting? The real star here is the giant rose window, the largest in Catalonia—a faithful replica made by Josep Maria Jujol, Gaudí’s right-hand man, after the original was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War. So yes, Catalan Gothic at its finest!
