The church of Saint George was built by the nobleman Georgios Latinos in 1664. Due to its relative isolation, it was selected by the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends), a secret 19th-century organization working to overthrow the Ottoman rule of Greece, as a meeting place. Prospective members were put under the Great Oath as they kneeled before the sacred icon depicting Christ Pantocrator (Almighty) surrounded by John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary, and Saint George. Many notable future leaders of the Greek War of Independence took the oath here, including Theodoros Kolokotronis (the most famous military leader), Nikitaras (who was later known as the Turk-Eater) and Dionysios Solomos.
