Life and death
Shakespeare on the bell tower
Koiliomenos is a settlement justly famous for its traditional stone houses. But the true star of this village is the bell tower of the church of Saint Nicholas, a rare example of Gothic architecture in Greece. The bell tower was built in 1893 by local stonemasons, it has four storeys and rises to a height of 22 meters. As is typical with religious architecture in Zakynthos, the bell tower is at a fair distance from its church. Far less typical is the wealth of strange symbols that adorns its top floor. The locals claim that the stonemasons carved their beliefs regarding life and death as well as the eternal battle between good and evil.
