Together with the rich Chian merchants emerged a large working class. They built the big harbor, the big mansions, the Customs Office, the churches and the orphanages. All these Chian craftsmen built their own homes anarchically on the rock they themselves named "Vrontado", the name of a hill on Chios, the island they abandoned.
