Why do I always stand on this hill, the "Rock" as Vamvakaris called this fort of a city, in ecstasy! I look over to the medieval church of Saint George, a spiritual monument. I look down onto the slope, where the little sheep that agitate us with their bells are slowly and slothfully moving. Three castle gates: "Kioura" up high, "Portara" below and "Kamara" on the other steep side of "Rock". Toil, faith, self-denial, and stone were the elements that made this fortress in medieval times.
