Porta tou Yialou
Porta tou Yialou–Panagia of the Chionon
One can enter the Porta tou Yialou coming from the beach in Chora in order to see the settlement of Bourgos. Even today one can discern its marble doorframes. Bourgos was the medieval settlement of Chora, outside the Castle walls, where mostly Greek-Orthodox resided (traders, craftsmen, fishermen, etc.). It is assumed that it was created in the 14th century after the catastrophic Turkish raid. It also had fortification-defensive features with the exterior of the houses and churches forming a kind of wall. There were four external gates (Gialos, Prophitis Elias, the Metropolis’s and Evriakis) and some internal ones as well.
