Marco Sanudo Rebuilds the Castle
The Trani Gate
At the beginning of the 13th century, shortly after the Fourth Crusade (1204), the Venetian noble Marco Sanudo occupies Naxos and other islands of the Cyclades, establishing the Duchy of the Aegean or the Archipelago (1207-1566). His descendants ruled the island until 1383, when a new Ducal dynasty emerged, that of the Crispus. In the period 1566-1579, the island was governed by the Jew, Iosif Nazi, and from then on, the Ottoman rule took place with some intervals when the Venetians recaptured the island (twice in the 17th century) as well as during the Russian occupation (1771-1775). In 1821 Naxos was released, although officially in 1830.
