The Ursulines of Naxos
The School of Ursulines
The Ursulines or Angelines, or the Order of Saint Ursula, is a female Catholic order. It was founded in 1533/1535 by the Italian saint of the western church, Angela Merici. Ursulines were in close collaboration with the Jesuits of Naxos, who were called upon to undertake the education and proper upbringing of the Catholic girls on the island. The first Ursulines that settled in Naxos were Italians from Tinos (1726), but later came French Ursulines (1739), who founded the famous school of the same name, the later Greek-French School Ursulines of Naxos (1931-1975).
