The Statue of Protopapadakis
The Beach
In the central square of the beach of Chora stands the statue of the former Prime Minister of Greece, Petros Emm. Protopapadakis (1859-1922) from Apeiranthos, Naxos. When Protopapadakis was the Minister of Finance during the Asia Minor Campaign and state finances diminished, he proceeded to lend money internally by cutting Greek banknotes with scissors (the scissors are exhibited at the Monetary Museum of Filoti). Afterwards, Protopapadakis became Prime Minister (May 9, 1922 - August 28, 1922) and was executed during the Trial of the Six (the emergency court martial that took place after the Asia Minor Catastrophe) on 15 November 1922.
