The castle stands atop a hill that rises 40m. above sea level. It forms a rough oval, 350m. long and 250m. wide, that encircles the hill. Two walls run northeast and southwest down the flanks of the hill from the main circuit to the water’s edge to protect Recinto, one of Vonitsa’s three suburbs, located north of the hill (it is now complete gone). The other suburbs (Borgo and Boccale) were east of the castle, where the modern town is. The steep sides of the hill were deemed an adequate protection, so the castle was only truly vulnerable from the southeast, were the main defences are concentrated. The rest of the circuit was only intermittently reinforced with square towers.
