The serpent
Castle of Vonitsa. Entrance's gate
Access to the castle was only possible if you followed a serpentine route through three successive gates. The outer gate is plain but protected by a massive flanking tower. The tower had two storeys, each with a single chamber, and an external flight of stone steps on its inner face leading to the parapet. The wallwalk is intact, accessible and leads to a triangular tower to the south. The north half of the wall curved and met the inner circuit but is now gone. The bailey (large outer court) is now empty and leads to the second gate, under the protection of the half-round towers of the second line of defence. This gate was demolished by the Germans in WWII but is still dominated by an artillery bastion with numerous loopholes.
