The holding wall
Castle of Vonitsa. Entrance's gate
The second and the third wall form a corridor leading to the third gate. Today this is nothing more than an opening in the inner wall but two irregular projecting walls that flank it may point to a more elaborate structure that stood here once. The walls are built of rough masonry and the scaffold holes are still visible. As soon as you enter through the gate you have a cistern on your left. It is also evident that the third wall is actually a massive retaining wall, since the parapet to your left is a mere two meters above the interior ground level, while the ground outside the wall is much lower. These walls were probably built by the Ottomans in the 17th century, while the original thin Byzantine walls extend to the north on all sides.
