The siege went on for many months. The Ottoman commander had been killed during the initial Greek attack in mid-December, but his men hoped that reinforcements would arrive on time to save them. But it was not to be. In early March the garrison decided to surrender on the sole condition that every man should be transported to Preveza with his weapons and his personal belongings. Church readily agreed to the terms. On March 5th the Greeks finally liberated Vonitsa. They strictly adhered to the terms of surrender, hoping to encourage other Ottoman garrisons to give up the fight.
