The lion of St. Mark
The church of St. Spyridon
The church of Hagios Spyridon was erected in 1787, towards the end of the Venetian rule in Vonitsa. The winged lion of St. Mark above the door holds an open book, as a symbol of the Venetian state's sovereignty. The imposing plane tree next to the church used to hold the church bells, before a proper belfry was added. The remains of Theodoros Grivas and his son Dimitrios lie beneath the tree. The former participated in the Greek War of Independence, but he seemed unable to exist in a state of peace. During the reign of King Otto (1832-1862) he suppressed one revolt against the king, led another against the government, and finally participated in the revolution that ousted Otto from Greece.
