Half women
The church of St. Spyridon
Hagios Spyridon is a single-aisle basilica. The plain exterior contrasts sharply to the elaborate interior decorations. The sculpted iconostasis was made by the famous woodcarvers of Epirus, who created a dreamy spectacle that includes scenes from the Old Testament (The Sacrifice of Isaac), grapes and vines, flowers, and the heads of flying angels. There are also some female figures and dove that appear cut in half; according to tradition, they contained lead and gold that was forcibly removed by the Ottomans. The lions and the skull beneath the large cross symbolize God’s absolute power over creation.
