No Country for Dead Men
Church of St. George
The small church of Saint George is fairly old. According to legend, the people of Vonitsa were trying to clear the ground for a cemetery but the wall would collapse each night. Finally, Saint George appeared to the builders and told them that he did not want dead people here. Only the living were welcome, especially if they rode horses. After all, Saint George is the patron saint of shepherds, who move their flocks to their summer pastures on his name day (April 23). He is also the saviour of children in danger, so in some of his icons there is a small child present next to the dying dragon. He is the quintessential Greek saint and George is the most popular male name in Greece.
