Horse riders
Church of St. George
On Saint George’s Day, the church welcomes hundreds of horse riders from Vonitsa and the surrounding communities. Most of them are young men, and they arrive with their horses appropriately adorned for the festive day. During the religious service, the horse riders gallop around the church constantly. Then they leave for town, where they will visit the homes of all the Georges to wish them a happy name day, and receive a drink and some meze in return. There is a popular belief that any rider who falls from the horse during this celebration will not be hurt. Back in the day there would also be a huge feast near the church, with many whole lambs roasted on the spit over charcoal.
