Wanted: respectable man
The mosque of Faik Pasha
The mosque of Faik Pasha was built by the admiral who conquered Arta in 1448. He used building material from churches and ancient sites in Arta and the surrounding countryside, including Nicopolis. The final result was so impressive that the Sultan Mehmet II demanded that a similar mosque be erected in the castle of Arta and named after him. Faik Pasha also selected the imam who served in his mosque. When this respectable man died, Faik Pasha could not find a man worthy to take his place, so he resigned from his military and governmental posts to become imam himself. He served for forty years, until his death. In his will he bequeathed all his wealth to the mosque.
