The mosque of Faik Pasha
The estate bequeathed by Faik Pasha was used to establish an imaret, a public soup kitchen where the old, the destitute and the orphans could find some comfort and sustenance. The mosque and the imaret were part of an extensive charitable complex that included a madrasa (religious school), a bathhouse, and an inn. The food was cooked in large cauldrons and was provided to all applicants, irrespective of their religion. Gradually the imaret lost most of its lands and fell into an irreversible decline. The surrounding countryside was used as a cemetery, but remained an attractive and peaceful suburb of Arta with some houses and gardens with orange and lemon trees, olive groves and reeds. The area was known as Marati (from the imaret).
