The sunken church
Louros | Church of St. Varnavas
The church of Saint Varnavas stands in the midst of an enchanting riparian forest. It may seem like any church lost in the middle of nowhere (so common in Greece), but Saint Varnavas has some truly mind boggling features. The church floor is three steps lower than the surrounding ground level; in the winter, water seeps up through the floor and reaches the level of the door. And pay close attention to the entrance. There are two capitals about halfway up. When the church was built, the ground was a full 1.5 meters lower and the capitals were at the top of the door. And if you look behind the upturned capital that now serves as a flower pot on the west side of the church, you will find the arc of another door now almost completely buried.
