The cave
The cave of Agios Vlasios
A particular geological feature of the north shore of the Ambracian Gulf is the presence of limestone hills that seem to float on the water. The path to the chapel/cave of Saint Vlasios is steep and contorted into all sorts of bizarre angles but take heart and climb. There is no chapel as such, only a handful of icons resting on the rock ledges of a shallow cave. The floor is covered in sheep manure, since the local shepherds use the cave as an animal shelter. But the view towards the Rodia lagoon is breathtaking. From this height you can truly appreciate the reed beds, the biggest single expanse of reeds in the Balkans.
