The port of unrequited dreams
The port of Salaora
In the second half of the 19th century there were many efforts to improve Salaora as a port of entry. It was connected by telegraph to Arta and there was also a post office (the postage stamps with a Salaora stamp are fairly rare). There was also a grand vision of a railway line connecting Salaora with Volos, on the other side of the Pindus mountains. But nothing came of it. In 1881 Arta became part of Greece and a new port (Koprena) was developed to facilitate trade. A garrison was established in Salaora, but in October 1912 the Greeks landed and liberated the port without encountering any resistance. Soon, there was almost nothing left standing, except for the custom house.
