A touch of baroque
Koronisia
The bell tower was erected in the 18th century and is notable for the crown of three triangular pediments. The construction has many baroque elements and demonstrates a clear influence from the architecture of the Ionian islands that were under Venetian rule when this tower was built. The inset marble plaque on the east side depicts two birds standing on an arch pecking at a palmette. The marble moulding right above the birds probably comes from an Hellenistic or Roman temple. The plaque dates to the 13th century and was originally part of a shrine. On the other side of the church, behind the tall stone wall, are the remains of an oil press from the 1870s.
