Homeless saints
Church of St. Dimitrios Katsouri
Soon after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453, the church of Saint Dimitrios received some unexpected guests. A priest arrived carrying the remains of Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora the Empress. He was trying to protect them from the new rulers of these lands, but the locals considered them a great opportunity to make a hefty profit through their sale to the highest bidder. The priest was notified of these plans in a dream by the saints themselves, so he left in the middle of the night for Salaora, and from there he caught a ship to Corfu, where the remains survive to the present day.
