An island of manure
Koprena
The most picturesque spot in Kopraina is located one kilometer to the south. A boardwalk that follows the course of the Vovos river will take you from the main square to the lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1907 on an island created by manure. Local farmers brought their cows here and over time the speck of dry land grew enough to accomodate the lighthouse and the keeper’s house. Both buildings’ foundations rest on wooden stakes driven into the lagoon, much like buildings in Venice. The lighthouse remained a crucial element in the port’s operation until the latter declined in importance after the Second World War and the development of the port of Preveza.
