Once upon a time, the people of Neochori and those of Kommeno lived together in a village south of present-day Neochori. One day, the Arachthos flooded and its waters went through the village and separated it in two halves with a deep ravine. Half the people moved north and founded Neochori, while the others moved south and founded Kommeno. But Arachthos was not done with Neochori. In 1830 the waters threatened the church of Saint Dimitrios with destruction, a task they completed in 1857 when they swept away every trace of the church and most of the village. The church we see today near the main square was built in 1967 and has a roof of pumice stone to keep it light.
