The Greeks were valiant soldiers but tended to panic easily. The sight of the Ottoman flags proved too much for the irregulars, who abandoned their positions and fled. The Turks were thus able to attack and massacre the Greeks. Soon they were in Peta, where the European battalion fought desperately around the church of Saint George, but the resistance was futile. The church was burned to the ground and almost 70 Europeans perished, while von Normann-Ehrenfels was wounded and died a few months later. The Turks did not even spare the injured in the hospital, with the surgeon escaping through the window as the Ottomans broke down the door.
