The Macedonian guard
The ancient Limnaia
The walls of ancient Limnaia were well-built. The outer face of the wall is built of carefully cut masonry, while the inner face is constructed of polygonal blocks. The core between the two faces was filled with rubble. The postern gate on the eastern long wall has a lintel carved to imitate an arch. It is possible that it was used by the Macedonian guard, left in Limnaia by Philip V, the charismatic King of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia from 221 to 179 BCE. He landed in Limnaia and planned to attack Thermo, the most important city of ancient Aetolia. He left a garrison in Limnaia to guard the city, and his baggage, and marched to the south in all possible haste.
