The Ottoman village
The ancient Limnaia
The citadel remained inhabited until the Byzantine period, when it was abandoned for unspecified reasons. There are indications of medieval repair work (search for sections of the wall made of small stones set in mortar). In the early 19th century the castle became home to a new community, when Ali Pasha of Ioannina forced the inhabitants of the neighbouring village of Ambrakia to resettle in the acropolis of Limnaia. The scattered remains of Ali Pasha’s village are visible near the church of Hagia Triada, built within the acropolis to serve the village. The crude round tower at the southwest corner of the circuit also dates from the early 19th century.
