Aquatic Janus
Ambracian Gulf
The Ambracian Gulf is notable for its Januslike appearance. The south coast, where Amfilochia is located, lacks major rivers or lagoons, and is marked by rolling hills that create a series of coves all the way to the Ionian sea. The north coast, on the other hand, is constantly shaped by the influence of two major rivers, the Louros and the Arachthos on the northwest and northeast corner respectively. The rivers drain into the gulf and create numerous lagoons and marshes, complex ecosystems that support many species of birds and fish. The north side is also very flat with the occasional limestone hill rising from the plain as if left behind by the passage of the aeons.
