1st Primary School
In 1908 Amfilochia acquired a four-teacher Kallias-type primary school. There is, though, a popular misconception regarding the financing of these schools. Most of them are attributed to the national benefactor Andreas Syngros, and are widely known as the Syngros schools. The confusion arose from a clause in his 1896 will that set aside 750,000 drachmas for the construction of primary schools in the Greek countryside. The amount, though generous, was totally inadequate to the needs of the educational system. It could only finance the construction of 50 single-teacher schools and the money lay unused until 1926. Almost all the so-called Syngros schools were built with public funds.
