The Italians
Church of St. Vasileios Agoras
On either side of the window of the eastern pediment of the church are two icons. The icon on the left depicts the Crucifixion. The cross stands upon a rock with a small cave below in which lies the skull of Adam, the first man. The Virgin and John the Evangelist stand on either side of the the crucified Christ. The other icon shows three popular Church Fathers (Gregory, Basil, and John Chrysostom) in the Byzantine iconographic tradition, in full-length frontal poses. Both icons were made in the majolica technique: each figure was produced independently, and placed before baking upon the background. These icons were the work of an Italian craftsman, or of a Byzantine artisan who studied in Italy. The originals are on display in the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina.
