Clock tower of Arta
The stone clocktower of Arta stands 21 meters tall. The sides are austere, with small openings on the south and east sides to allow sunlight to illuminate the interior. The clock and dials are set in an iron frame with white glass. The sole entrance to the tower is on the north side at a height from the ground, meaning that maintenance personnel has to use a wooden ladder to access the door. A spiral staircase leads to the top. The clock mechanism sounds every 30 minutes and marks time with the big bell at the top. The tile roof is a later addition. The clock tower was built in the 17th century and was the first mechanical clock used anywhere in the Ottoman Empire.
