Ali’s ambition
The castle of Pantokrator
The Pantokratoras fort was built by Ali Pasha in 1807 to ensure control of the sea approaches to Preveza and the Ambracian gulf. The fort was named after the church that stood on the site. Inadvertently perhaps, the fort has a most appropriate name, since pantokrator is one of many names of God and can be translated as “Ruler of All”. Ali definitely felt himself equal to the task of ruling all that came within his greedy reach, and the numerous forts he erected in Preveza were means to that end. The fort was designed by the French engineer Yaudocourt, and the Italian Monteleone supervised its construction.
