How to silence a fort
The fortress of Laskara
Over the next month, the seas around Preveza witnessed much naval activity, as Greek warships tried to silence the Ottoman guns. Both sides exchanged fire across the gulf but it was the Greek batteries that caused most damage, especially when they landed four shells in Laskara, which forced the garrison to flee. In the meantime, the people of Preveza watched the events from the shore with intense fascination, while Greek soldiers across the bay swam next to the wreck of the “Macedonia”. The ruins of Laskara remained undisturbed due to the great distance from Preveza, that made the reuse of any building material very difficult.
