His master’s voice
Singing in the City of Victory
When I was a young actor, my teacher was adamant that if I wanted to win the first prize in dramatic competitions and have my name publicly recorded on marble victory lists I had to train my voice and make it indelibly notable. How else would these thousands of spectators, looking down on us actors from the distance of the top rows of the theater, be able to tell us apart? Only the protagonist is in contention for the prize and with three actors present, all of whom wear masks and body-length costumes, the audience must depend on our distinctive vocal tone to differentiate among us. I was ambitious ever since I set my foot in the theater and I was worked hard to make my voice stand out.
