36 bronze rams
The Great Games
Such an important event requires the appropriate infrastructure but Augustus and his successors have spared neither money not effort to transform the flat land beneath the sacred hill of Apollo into a magnificent precinct equipped with a gymnasium, the theater (alas, why should repair work prevent such a magnificent actor from entering it), baths, and the Victory Monument on the slopes of the hill. This extraordinary building is decorated with 36 bronze rams from captured enemy ships and occupies the site of Augustus’ camp from where he set forth to attack the enemies of the res publica. The gods favored him and now he has consecrated his camp to Neptune and Mars.
