A thrill runs down my spine every time I enter the stadium. It is located between the theater and the gymnasium and it is an oval with an east-west orientation. Here the architects took advantage of the lower slopes of the hill to configure the north side, while the other sides were man-made and retained with massive walls. This stadium has two semi-circular ends. A merchant from Smyrna told me that there are a few such stadia in Asia but I have been unable to learn of their existence anywhere else in Greece. Perhaps this is why I like it: it resembles an amphitheater, so I hope to watch a gladiatorial combat on my way back, should the local authorities finally decide to organize one.
