I shouldn’t be surprised though. The chorus is always a point of contention with those who control the strings of the purse. The rehearsals are time-consuming since fifteen players must bring together music, movement, and text. They have to learn the play via oral repetition, since almost none of them can read, even though many of them have their own opinions on the lines and the story. They must learn the melodies by ear; even great Euripides had to sing his odes to his chorus during the rehearsal. And the patterns of the dance are worked out between them on their feet. Throughout this lengthy process, these people have to be paid and fed.
