The soldiers of Dionysus
A city upon a hill
Our disappointment was palpable. Some of these masks belonged to my grandfather and were handmade by him the old-fashioned way. He dipped rags into plaster and then pressed them in a mold to give them the right shape. He then applied a thin layer of plaster on which he painted the eyebrows, the lips, the wrinkles, and the colour of the skin. They look like an hoplite helmet and they cover the entire head (not just the face). They are uncomfortable, so we use a knit cap to protect the top of our head. The leather he used to tie them under his chin came from his own sheep. I am always astounded at the ingenuity of the huge mouth (that allows my voice to sound loud and clear) and the tiny hole for the eyes that severely limited my field of vision...again, much like an hoplite helmet!
