The earthquake was scary so we decided to make a sacrifice to the gods. I was unable to find an altar dedicated to Poseidon but I don’t suppose he would mind if we gave our offerings to his mighty brother. The altar of Zeus Soter (Saviour) stands right before the prytaneion and his name is neatly carved on the stone. We offered him some wine we had and then searched for the altar of Dionysus. Our guide to Cassope had told us that the inhabitants honored Dionysus not just by erecting a large theater but also by using his image as a bearded male on their coins (a wine jug with a wreath was on the other side of the coin). Unfortunately, his altar was nowhere to be found.
