The clouds parade
The great theater
There is no comparison in my mind between performing in an open-air theater and appearing in an odeum. How can you perform Antigone if you cannot see the rising of the sun as called for in the play? The setting, whether it is the plains of Cassope or Mount Hymettus back home allow the spectators to travel from the drama unfolding in the orchestra to the impressive world of the natural environment. I don’t really have much respect for Aristophanes but I have to admit that trying to imagine Socrates observing the sun from his wafting basket in the “Clouds” while sitting inside an odeum is fairly ridiculous. Much better to see his Clouds parading when you can see the actual clouds floating above you.
